Commitment to a Safer, More Secure Tomorrow!

To fulfill our mission of establishing a safer, more secure tomorrow, the U.S. is currently building a Mixed Oxide Fuel Fabrication Facility (MFFF) which will be a major component in the United States’ program to dispose of surplus weapons-grade plutonium.

About The MOX Project

CB&I AREVA MOX Services, LLC, has been contracted by the U.S. National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) to design, build, and operate a Mixed Oxide (MOX) Fuel Fabrication Facility at the Savannah River Site in Aiken, South Carolina. Once completed, the facility will convert surplus nuclear weapons-grade plutonium into safe, stable fuel for civilian nuclear power generation. This work supports international nuclear nonproliferation agreements in which the United States and Russia will decommission 68 metric tons of surplus plutonium, sufficient for approximately 17,000 nuclear weapons, and will produce enough electricity to power roughly 4,500 homes for three years with one fuel assembly.
